Is It Safe To Distill Alcohol In Aluminum??

I have found that aluminum will corrode in the low pH environment of a fermentation.

In a distilling environment this can dangerous if you are using the aluminum as a pressure vessel.

Its also kind of gross and although not much aluminum will get into your product, its certainly not a selling point.

Can you make moonshine in stainless steel?

However, you can add copper mesh to your stainless steel still to remove the sulfur compounds and improve the taste and aroma of the alcohol. While many experienced distillers agree that copper produces the best moonshine, you can also make a great product with tough and durable stainless steel.

What is a thumper keg?

Some moonshiners use a thump keg, which is simply a heated barrel into which the steam is forced. The worm box is a crate or barrel that has cold water, usually diverted from a nearby creek, flowing into the top and then back out the bottom.

Why are whiskey stills made of copper?

The best alcohol stills are either made from stainless steel or copper because both are effective heat conductors and do not allow harmful chemicals to infiltrate the distilled spirit. Copper also reacts with sulfur – an element that has a foul taste and is naturally created when yeast ferments.

Are copper pots better?

It is widely known that copper conducts heat five times better than iron and even twenty times better than stainless steel. Thanks to the excellent heat conductivity properties, the heat spreads more evenly in copper cookware than in traditional pots and pans.

What is a thumper on a still?

Some moonshine stills have a “thumper” or “doubler” between them and the condensor. This is a jar of sorts, half-filled with liquid (water, mash or tails). See the Moonshine Photos for examples of them. Thumper. This acts as a simple second distillation stage.

Are copper pots worth it?

Of those options, cast iron is the least efficient when it comes to heat distribution. Copper cookware is very expensive. While copper pots and pans are extremely expensive, and most likely out of the price range of an Austin culinary arts student, they last much longer than other pots and pans if cared for properly.
